BMI – see Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index – A figure that is used to help determine if one might have a weight problem. This is a screening tool rather than a diagnostic too. This is a figure that is determined by dividing one’s weight in kilograms by one’s height in meters squared (or by dividing ones weight in pounds by one’s height in inches squared and multiplying the result by 703 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011b).
Obese – Having a BMI over 30 is generally considered obese (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011b).
Overweight – Having a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is generally considered overweight (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011b).
Skinfold thickness – A method of screening for overweight or obesity by compressing a section of skin and the subcutaneous layers between the thumb and index finger and measuring the thickness of the fold using calipers in order to estimate the amount of body fat (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011c).
