Overview
Overweight and obesity are labels that are based on a comparison of an individual's height and weight. These labels generally indicate that an individual weighs more than is considered health for that individual's weight (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011a). People who are overweight or obese are more likely to experience various diseases and health problems than are people who are not overweight or obese.
One screening tool that can be used to help determine if someone is overweight or obese is the calculation of the individual’s body mass index (BMI) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011a).
If you are an adult, 20 years old or older, you can quickly calculate your BMI by going to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web site (http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.html). You can also learn more about BMI on the CDC web site.
